BERLIN (AP) — Donyell Malen scored late for Borussia Dortmund to start the Bundesliga with a fortunate 1-0 win over Cologne on Saturday, though it didn’t prevent memories of the team’s missed title chance from being revived.Dortmund labored for long periods to break through the well-drilled visitor’s disciplined unit and was fortunate that Cologne’s Davie Selke, Dejan Ljubicic and substitute Sargis Adamyan did not score. Dortmund looked set for another disappointing draw at home in the league. In its previous game at the Westfalenstadion, Dortmund failed to wrap up the title last season when it was held by Mainz to 2-2 on the final day, when Bayern Munich capitalized with a 2-1 win in Cologne.Malen scored in the 88th minute when he bundled the ball in at the far post after a corner, and Dortmund’s luck held as Max Finkgräfe missed another chance for Cologne to equalize with the last kick of the game.Malen had been due to go off just minutes before he scored, but Dortmund coach ...Florida backup running back Cam Carroll is out for the season because of knee injury

MILAN (AP) — Victor Osimhen scored twice to help defending champion Napoli come from behind to win at newly promoted Frosinone 3-1 on the opening day of Serie A on Saturday.Osimhen, the leading goal-scorer last season with 26, scored in each half to help Napoli get its title defense off to a good start.Frosinone took a surprise lead in the seventh minute through an Abdou Harroui penalty before Matteo Politano leveled. It was a positive debut for new Napoli coach Rudi Garcia, who replaced Luciano Spalletti in the offseason. Spalletti left Napoli after steering the southern team to its first Serie A title in 33 years, saying he was taking a sabbatical year — then was appointed as Italy coach on Friday following Roberto Mancini’s shock resignation.Frosinone also had a new coach in Eusebio Di Francesco after he took over from Fabio Grosso, who left the team after leading it to its first ever Serie B title. And it was the home side which surprisingly scored the first goal of the new season...Phillies place left-hander Ranger Suárez on injured list with strained hamstring

DUBLIN (AP) — England’s preparations for the Rugby World Cup plunged into further chaos when Billy Vunipola was red-carded for a dangerous tackle in a 29-10 loss to top-ranked Ireland in a warmup match illuminated by a stunning late try by Keith Earls on Saturday.Vunipola, the only specialist No. 8 in England’s World Cup squad, saw his yellow card upgraded to a red by the newly introduced bunker review system after smashing his right shoulder into the face of Ireland prop Andrew Porter in the 53rd minute at Lansdowne Road.A disciplinary panel will determine the length of Vunipola’s suspension next week but he is in danger of missing the start of the World Cup — just like captain Owen Farrell, who missed the match in Dublin amid his own disciplinary process.World Rugby has appealed against the decision by a judicial committee to overturn a red card handed to Farrell for his dangerous, no-arms tackle on Wales flanker Taine Basham at Twickenham last week.
