By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesYou don’t have to be Irish to appreciate St. Patrick’s Day, especially when it comes to the food (green bagels excepted).Like many people marking the day, I prefer to follow a more traditional path and rejoice in the green by piling colcannon on my plate, soft mashed potatoes speckled with bits of kale or cabbage and suffused with loads of butter (the more, the better).Colcannon, which comes from the Gaelic term “cál ceannann” — most likely meaning white-headed cabbage — has been a staple in Ireland since at least the 18th century, when potatoes, a relative newcomer to the Irish diet brought over from the Americas, met cabbage and kale, leafy garden stalwarts that were already cornerstones of the cuisine.Related ArticlesRestaurants, Food and Drink | Scorpion tamales, larvae tacos and worm tostadas are on the menu at Denver’s La Diabla this week Restaurants, Food and Drink | Recipe: A shepherd’s pie perfect fo...LAUSD unions to announce dates of upcoming 3-day strike

From There’s Something About Mary to The Ringer, The Farrelly Brothers have always been fascinated by people with physical or cognitive challenges. And even if those who suffer are the butt of the joke, there’s an underlying sweetness which belies any flagrant cruelty. In Champions, Bobby Farrelly’s solo directorial debut, he celebrates the verve and tenacity of kids with mental disabilities– with frustratingly mixed results. His heart is in the right place, but he’s so busy slathering on the schmaltz and making everyone feel fuzzy, he forgot to craft an engaging plot with memorable characters.Based on the 2018 Spanish comedy hit Campeones, the always likable Woody Harrelson plays Marcus Markovich, a hapless assistant coach for a Des Moines minor league team. After getting fired for shoving his head coach (Ernie Hudson) during a game, Marcus goes on a bender before driving and smashing into a police car. For his penance, the judge sentences him to 90 days of community service ...St. Patrick’s Day: 4 Irish food finds (corned beef and cabbage on a stick?) plus a freebie

By Juan A. Lozano and Paul J. Weber | Associated PressHOUSTON — Texas officials on Wednesday announced a state takeover of Houston’s nearly 200,000-student public school district, the eighth-largest in the country, acting on years of threats and angering Democrats who assailed the move as political. The announcement, made by Republican Gov.
