More funding coming to Illinois for microbiology research

NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) - More funding is coming to Illinois to continue the fight against infections.According to a press release, U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, R-Rockford, joined the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to announce on Monday that Illinois State University will receive $74,000 in funding for microbiology research.The goal of the research is to better treat infections and find alternatives to antibiotics."I commend Illinois State University researchers for securing this critical funding that will help our region lead the way in biological research," Sorensen said. "Partnerships between universities and the federal government help Central and Northwestern Illinois realize its potential by investing in the talented minds at our local schools." Google users can now apply for their share of a $23 million privacy lawsuit settlement.Anyone who thinks they clicked on any Google search result link between October 2006 and September 2013 is eligible to receive a payment, however small.Google agreed to the settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit accusing the company of “storing and intentionally, systematically and repeatedly divulging” users’ search queries and histories to third-party websites and companies.To claim their share, users should submit a claim online by July 31. Applicants are required to provide their name, address, email and payment information.According to the site, the estimated individual payout is $7.70, but that could change based on the number of people who submit claims.A final hearing to approve the settlement is set for Oct. 12, according to the claim administrator website. Homeowners and local authorities are watching helplessly as homes continue to collapse into a canyon on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Monday. The Newport Beach Police Department is offering tips to the public on how to prevent residential burglaries after a Crystal Cove home was ransacked.The burglary was reported on Thursday, though it is believed to have occurred at about 8:45 p.m. on June 27 on Sandy Cove, police said in a news release. Police believe three burglars climbed a glass wall into the backyard, stood on a patio chair to get up to a balcony and shattered a glass door to gain entry to the house."The suspects ransacked the master bedroom, master bathroom and master closet," police said.
