Kickin’ It with Kiz: Sean Payton more like Mike Shanahan than Nathaniel Hackett

What has struck me about Sean Payton’s tenure as coach of the Broncos is how quiet it has been. No stories about how he is buddies with the players or his special football analytics. It feels — dare I say — adult?— Brennan, BrooklynKiz: When the Broncos blundered by hiring Nathaniel Hackett, it couldn’t have been much worse if general manager George Paton had put a starry-eyed ball boy in charge of our local NFL team. As is often the case after a failed hire, the pendulum has swung dramatically in the other direction. Payton carries himself like a gridiron king. He’s supremely confident and domineering. Dare I say arrogant? Reminds me more than a little of Mike Shanahan. Does the way Payton conducts his football business guarantee the Broncos will get back to the Super Bowl? No. But it gives the team a shot it never had with Hackett. Martin Amis, whose caustic, erudite and bleakly comic novels redefined British fiction in the 1980s and ’90s with their sharp appraisal of tabloid culture and consumer excess, and whose private life made him tabloid fodder himself, died Friday at his home in Lake Worth, Florida. He was 73.His wife, writer Isabel Fonseca, said the cause was esophageal cancer — the same disease that killed his close friend and fellow writer Christopher Hitchens in 2011.Amis published 15 novels, a well-regarded memoir (“Experience,” in 2000), works of nonfiction, and collections of essays and short stories. In his later work, he investigated Josef Stalin’s atrocities, the war on terror and the legacy of the Holocaust. He is best known for his so-called London trilogy of novels — “Money: A Suicide Note” (1985), “London Fields” (1990) and “The Information” (1995) — which remain, along with his memoir, his most representative and admired work. The tone of these novels was bright, bristling and profane. “Wha...Longtime fugitive sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for role in 2011 San Jose murder

SAN JOSE — A Tijuana man who spent years on the lam from racketeering and murder charges before being extradited to the United States has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for participating in a 2011 gang-related murder, court records show.Juan “Droopy” Sandoval, 31, pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder, and was sentenced May 16 by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila, court records show. Another man, 40-year-old Roberto Jaime Martinez, aka “Espantos,” stabbed Diaz to death during the atta...Jimmy Buffet hospitalized, postpones show
