By Lauren Mascarenhas | CNNAs people flock to beaches, lakes and pools this Memorial Day to celebrate the unofficial start of summer, the swimmers are here – but the lifeguards aren’t. At least, that’s what some parks departments and agencies around the country are saying as they scramble to find and keep lifeguards on duty for the season. In New York, it takes around 1,400 lifeguards to keep the city’s beaches and pools fully staffed, and officials are feeling the staffing strain.“This number includes a second shift of lifeguards to cover early morning and late-night swim programming at pools, which we are not able to accommodate this year,” New York City Parks press officer Gregg McQueen told CNN.Like communities across the country, the city’s lifeguard ranks were severely depleted by losses during the Covid-19 pandemic, McQueen said. Many public swimming venues were shut down during the pandemic and some certified and potential lifeguards found work elsewhere. With over 200 new rec...Fire breaks out at UC Berkeley housing facility

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s warring sides on Monday agreed to extend a shaky cease-fire in their battle for control of the country, after two key international mediators signaled impatience with persistent truce violations. The five-day extension of the cease-fire between Sudan’s military and its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, was announced in a joint statement late Monday by Saudi Arabia and the United States.“The extension will provide time for further humanitarian assistance, restoration of essential services, and discussion of a potential longer-term extension,” the statement said. The development came after both Riyadh and Washington on Sunday called out both warring sides for specific breaches of a week-long truce that is to expire Monday evening rather than issue another general appeal to respect agreements.Sudan descended into chaos after fighting erupted in mid-April between the military, led by Gen. Abdel- Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Gen. Moh...Police identify victims in Woodbridge triple homicide

NATO on Monday condemned an attack on peacekeepers in Kosovo that left around 25 international troops wounded. Members of the Kosovo Force (KFOR), a NATO-led peacekeeping mission, were injured during clashes with Serb protesters in northern Kosovo. KFOR said late Monday that after units were deployed to contain violent demonstrations, “several soldiers of the Italian and Hungarian KFOR contingent were the subject of unprovoked attacks and sustained trauma wounds with fractures and burns due to the explosion of incendiary devices.” Tensions are running high in the region. On Friday, the U.S., France, Italy, Germany, and the U.K. issued a joint statement condemning Kosovo’s decision to force access to municipal buildings in northern Kosovo. The five countries also said they are “concerned by Serbia’s decision to raise the level of readiness of its Armed Forces at the border with Kosovo and call all parties for maximum restraint, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric.&...Doctors say this is the most important virus you’ve never heard of

(CNN) — The past winter was a heavy one for respiratory viruses, dominated by surges of RSV, influenza and Covid-19. But just as it was winding down, a little-known virus that causes many of the same symptoms – a lower lung infection, hacking cough, runny nose, sore throat and fever – was just picking up steam.Cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, spiked this spring, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s respiratory virus surveillance systems. It filled hospital intensive care units with young children and seniors who are the most vulnerable to these infections. At its peak in mid-March, nearly 11% of tested specimens were positive for HMPV, a number that’s about 36% higher than the average, pre-pandemic seasonal peak of 7% test positivity. Most people who caught it probably didn’t even know they had it, however. Sick people aren’t usually tested for it outside of a hospital or ER. Unlike Covid-19 and the flu, there’s no vaccine...Orioles finish first third of 2023 season with 5-0 loss to Guardians

There’s an adage in baseball that every team will win and lose a third of its games, leaving the other third as those that will decide their seasons. The Orioles would be positioned well if their first 54 games prove to be that decisive third. Even with Monday’s 5-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians — one in which center fielder Cedric Mullins exited in the eighth inning with an apparent lower-body injury — Baltimore is off to a 34-20 start, the sixth-best start in franchise history. Each of the five teams they trail reached the postseason and won at least 97 games. Going 54-54 the rest of the way would leave Baltimore with 88 victories, a total that would likely be enough for the organization’s first playoff berth since 2016.In the years since, the Orioles have often challenged that adage, frequently credited to longtime Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda. They won fewer than 54 games in 2018 and 2021, exactly that many in 2019, and played only a ha...Latest news
