Ticker: Train engineers frustrated as others get sick time; Ford issues recall on some Rangers

Tens of thousands of engineers remain frustrated with the lack of paid sick time and the demands railroads like BNSF are making in negotiations despite the progress that has been made this year with sick time deals for most of the other rail unions. The lack of paid sick time and concerns about demanding schedules took center stage during last fall’s contract talks. Several railroads have made deals this year to give some of their workers sick time. But the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen say the railroads are still asking for too much in return for giving sick time, and most railroads still want to penalize workers if they do take sick time.“They want to talk the money out of our pocket somewhere else and give it back to us in the form of sick time,” said Rob Cunningham, one of the BLET’s general chairmen who is leading the negotiations with BNSF.Ford issues recall on some RangersFord Motor Co. is recalling certain 2004 to 2006 Ranger vehicles because rep...Man shot by deputies in North County

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians started their day at the plate by ambushing Twins pitcher Joe Ryan, three of the first four hitters reaching base with singles. In those first at-bats, they did something that the Twins couldn’t do all series: score a run that did not come via home run.On Sunday, the Twins didn’t even do that. Their franchise-record 18-day home-run streak came to an end in a 2-0 loss in the series finale to the Guardians at Progressive Field. The Twins did not get their first hit until the seventh inning against Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill, who had retired 16 straight batters before Alex Kirilloff sent his first hit of the season out to right field. Quantrill encountered little challenge all day against a Twins lineup that finished the series having scored just five runs.Their best opportunity against the right-hander came in the second inning when he hit Byron Buxton with a pitch to lead off the inning before walking Kirilloff and Joey Gallo. But the Twins’ wo...Latest news
