Troy calls on public to help clear debris from drains TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The city of Troy is asking the public for help removing debris from drainage systems. Crews for the Department of Public Utilities need help to mitigate flooding.Over 5,000 catch basins can be found throughout the city of Troy, that’s why the city is calling on the public to help keep them clear, and ultimately keep property safe.Superintendent of Public Utilities, Chris Wheland, says it’s not possible for crews to clear every catch basin that gets clogged. He says with the public’s help clearing the debris the sewer system will work to the best of its ability.“The water will go down the drain and will stop the flooding. If you let those leaves and that debris go on top of the catch basin and say ‘Oh that’s somebody else’s problem’ it’s going to flood the street and potentially flood your home,” said Wheland. He says crews work diligently to prevent clogged drainage systems, but at a certain point it's inevitable.“With any first significant rainfall like th...

Dig begins for the remains of dozens of children at a long-closed Native American boarding school in Nebraska GENOA, Neb. — In a remote patch of a long-closed Native American boarding school, near a canal and some railroad tracks, Nebraska’s state archeologist and two teammates filled buckets with dirt and sifted through it as if they were searching for gold. They’re trying to find the bodies of dozens of children who died at the school and have been lost for decades, a mystery that archeologists aim to unravel as they dig in a central Nebraska field that was part of the sprawling campus a century ago.People toting shovels, trowels and even smaller tools are searching the unmarked site where ground-penetrating radar suggested a possible location for the cemetery of the Genoa Indian Industrial School. Genoa was part of a national system of more than 400 Native American boarding schools that attempted to assimilate Indigenous people into white culture by separating children from their families and cutting them off from their heritage. And the discovery of more than 200 children’s remains...

A cherry pie that’s as sweet (or sour) as you want it to be By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesApple pie may rule fall, but cherry pie is summer’s queen, lording over all other flavors for the few brief weeks when fresh cherries are in season. Because, while cherry pies made with frozen fruit are perfectly delightful, nothing beats the juicy bite of seasonal cherries, baked until syrupy and wrapped in a buttery crust. The only question is, sour cherries or sweet? Lime also works, adding floral notes along with its bite. You can skip this step with sour cherries, which are born zippy.Sour cherries do need mor...
