The Adverts Through LA’s Eyes: It’s one of those things, isn’t it. This band is being billed as T.V. Smith’s Adverts, due to the fact that Smith is the one Advert left and his band is filled with “a crack team of Houston musicians especially formed for this project.”That’s drawn some criticism, but it’s not really his fault. Beloved former bass player Gaye Advert is an artist now, creating wonderful stained glass amongst other things. The rest of the band switched around between their two albums anyway, and Howard Pickup sand Tim Cross are sadly no longer with us.So this version of the Adverts, touring the States for the first time and playing songs from those two classic albums — Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts and Cast of Thousands — is as good as we can hope for in 2023. As it turns out, it’s more than good enough. At Zebulon, a wonderful place to see a show with its large corner stage, the band was phenomenal...Meet Plastic Problems Painter Constance Mallinson

With a taste for the sumptuous detail and prismatic colors of 17th-century Dutch still life painting, and an equal love for picturesque landscape and the random plastic garbage she collects on her daily walks, Constance Mallinson blends classic modes of art history with a critique of modern hyper-consumerism. Like Rauschenberg on his one-block-radius hunt for his Combine series’ sculptural materials, she accumulates and hoards all manner of found objects—toys, food wrappers, containers, ribbons, balloons, figurines, accessories, electronics, grooming tools, giftwrap, bubble wrap, styrofoam, tape, tokens, bags, dolls, straws, novelties, baby stuff, stress balls—before arranging them into compositions, and rendering their kaleidoscopes of clutter in photorealist, 1:1 scale.Constance Mallinson: Playing With Sea Animals, Oil on Canvas, 18 x 24 inches, 2023 (Courtesy of rdfa)Evoking surprise, delight, disgust, nostalgia, whimsy, humor, horror, and shame, Mallinson’s prismatic paintings a...12 fantastic Bay Area doughnut shops that will knock your socks off

Twinkies, Toys R Us and Gymboree share the distinction of being beloved consumer brands that were euthanized by their parent companies, but resurrected under new ownership to the delight of distraught devotees.A cruise line being added to the list of brand favorites brought back from the dead is nothing short of a maritime miracle on the heels of a pandemic. The hardship could be felt all the way in South America. Several months ago, off the coast of French Guiana on another ultra-luxury cruise line, a senior-aged woman from California felt the need to tell a travel writer that s...‘Pokemon Go’ new Party Play feature adds another reason to team up in real life

Niantic has always been big on bringing players together when it comes to their games. They make friends face to face while accomplishing the goal of defeating a legendary Pokemon or carving parts from a rare creature. Now, the developer hopes to amplify that feeling togetherness through Party Play in “Pokemon Go.” The new feature, which comes out soon, lets players team up in groups of up to four and challenge each other to catch Pokemon, spin stops or do activities such as defeating raids.
