Amanda Gorman says her inaugural poem has been banned by school

(The Hill) - American poet Amanda Gorman said on Tuesday that the poem she recited during President Biden’s inauguration has been banned by a school in Miami-Dade County. “I’m gutted. Because of one’s parent’s complaint, my inaugural poem, The Hill We Climb, has been banned from an elementary school in Miami-Dade County, Florida,” Gorman said in a statement posted to Twitter. Gorman noted in her statement that, while not new, book bans have been on the rise in recent years. "What's more, often all it takes to remove these works from our libraries and schools is a single objection," Gorman said.“And let’s be clear: most of the forbidden works are by authors who have struggled for generations to get on bookshelves,” Gorman said. “The majority of these censored works are by queer and non-whit voices.” Gorman also said the reaso...

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 14:20:15 GMT

Dear Amy: I’m in my early 20s and living at home. I’m paying my parents rent, but the money I pay doesn’t include anything else – just the room. This doesn’t seem fair to me, and I’d really appreciate hearing what you think of this.– Renter at HomeDear Renter: You’ve just described … rent. When you rent, you pay the owner of the dwelling for the roof over your head. That’s all. When you’re a child, your parents provide all of the extras. When you’re an adult, having someone else do the cooking, cleaning and laundry is what happens at a hotel.Once you accept this reality, you should do some research to see if you are able to afford rent and living expenses elsewhere. You may find that – even without the extras – you are benefiting from the lower cost of living at home. Many young people use this transition period at home as a way to aggressively save money toward the higher cost of living elsewhere.Dear Amy: About two years ago, I messaged “Bradley” on social media.
