TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Hudson Valley Community College is offering free textbooks to students taking a nine-day winter session course. The intensive courses fit an entire semester of material into an accelerated term. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! “We understand that many students aim to get ahead during the winter break but struggle with the cost of higher education,” said Hudson Valley President Roger Ramsammy. “By covering the cost of their books, our goal is to ease any financial difficulties and help students stay on track and advance their goals quickly.” The credit-bearing courses run from January 2 to 12. Most courses are offered online. A few will be held on campus or in a hybrid format. The courses are available for current, transfer, or new students. LOUIS - The St. Louis Board of Education has filed a lawsuit in an effort to stop a newly proposed charter school from opening.The lawsuit contends wrongdoing not only on behalf of organizers behind the charter school, but also of the Missouri State Charter School Commission and Missouri State Board of Education.An Indianapolis-based group has been pushing for a charter high school known as "Believe STL Academy" in the City of St. Louis. City sells stolen car in error; won’t share profits with victim Missouri state law requires that new charter school applicants provide a copy of their application to a local school board within five days of filing their application with the state. Residents of an off-campus student apartment building serving Denver’s Auraria Campus are being told to sign up to shower in a nearby hotel because their building has been without hot water for nearly two months.The boiler system at the Auraria Student Lofts, located at 1051 14th St. across from the Denver Performing Arts Complex, malfunctioned in mid-September, leaving student tenants without access to consistent hot water since then, according to Paula Platt, senior vice president of Nelson Partners Student Housing, which manages the property.The parts to fix the boiler are custom and must be manufactured, Platt said. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies are investigating after at least one person was injured in a shooting after deputies responded to a "terrorist threat."Around 11:20 a.m., deputies from the Victorville station responded to the In-Shape Family Fitness gym located on the 14600 block of Valley Center Drive.A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Department said a shooting involving an officer took place at the scene.It's unclear where the shooting took place, but video from Sky5 showed crime scene tape blocking off the entrance to the gym. The Sheriff's Department would not confirm injuries to either the suspect or any deputies, but video from a witness at the scene appeared to show one person being airlifted from the scene by helicopter.No further updates have been released at this time.
