New bill seeks to make farmland more affordable for new and underserved farmers

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- Some farmers can't afford to own the land they use to grow their produce and livestock."I was going to have to stop farming altogether," said Susan Mitchell.For Mitchell, finding farmland was an uphill battle. She spent nearly a decade bouncing from one leased plot of land to another."It was incredibly challenging to find something that was affordable for me as a full-time working farmer," Mitchell said.And she's not alone. (NEXSTAR) – Earlier this week the Federal Trade Commission announced that $3.3 million will go to tens of thousands of victims of a student loan debt relief scheme.The FTC said troubled Arete Financial Group claimed to be affiliated with the U.S. Dept. of Education to dupe people desperate to rid themselves of monthly student loan payments.Arete promised to reduce or eliminate the interest charges if borrowers sent them payments upfront, but "the scammers pocketed customers' payments and never provided the promised relief," the FTC said. AUSTIN (KXAN) – Business owners near a sanctioned encampment in southeast Austin have said that without enough space for people to live inside the camp, the overflow is causing problems outside of it. Caleb Harris owns a franchise of College Hunks, a moving company, which is run out of a building just north of Esperanza Community. Harris said especially over the last month, they've seen an increased number of people -- who overwhelmingly appear to be living on the vacant property behind the camp -- breaking into cars, stealing equipment and becoming aggressive with people at the business. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Despite the disruptions of vandalism, eviction, inflation and online bookstores, Austin's Book Woman is still standing. It was the collective project of 13 women who wanted Austin to have a feminist bookstore. A man from Oxnard was arrested on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm on Friday, and now his case will be heard by a federal judge. According to a release from the FBI, Pedro Garcia, 27, also known as “Maniac,” was indicted by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles for illegally possessing a .38 special revolver and ammunition because he had been previously convicted of a felony. Garcia, who is a known member of the Colonia Chiques street gang, had been convicted of various violations of the California Penal Code and the Health and Safety Code, including assault with a deadly weapon, battery with criminal street gang activity, possession of a controlled substance with a firearm and evading a police officer, among other offenses. If convicted, Garcia would face a statutory maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison. Driver Wanted after Hitting 40-Year-Old Man Near Vernon AvenueLOS ANGELES, CA (June 16, 2023) – Early Saturday morning, a hit-and-run crash on Central Avenue left Silvino Gomez hospitalized.The collision happened around 6:00 a.m. at Central Avenue and Vernon Avenue in the neighborhood of South Los Angeles.According to the police, a dark-colored vehicle ran a red light while traveling speeding on Central Avenue. The vehicle then collided with Gomez, who was walking on the street. The impact of the collision ejected Gomez into the air and he landed on his head.Following the crash, the driver did not stop to render aid to the victim, fleeing the scene instead.First responders the site of the crash transported 40-year-old Silvino Gomez of South Los Angeles to a local hospital for treatment.
