California AG blames Florida for charter flight that brought migrants to Sacramento Florida appears to have arranged for a group of South American migrants to be transported from Texas to California and dropped off in Sacramento, California's attorney general said, noting that he's looking into whether any crimes may have been committed. If true, the 16 Colombian and Venezuelan migrants who turned up at the Roman Catholic Church diocese’s headquarters in Sacramento on Friday would be the latest to have been moved from a Republican-led state to one led by Democrats.Attorney General Rob Bonta said that although the circumstances surrounding their arrival in the California capital are still being investigated, the migrants had documentation that appeared to have been issued by Florida. He also said he's evaluating whether violations of civil or criminal law took place.“While we continue to collect evidence, I want to say this very clearly: State-sanctioned kidnapping is not a public policy choice, it is immoral and disgusting,” Bonta said in a statement. The migrants ent...

Meet Cut Paper Character Dakota Noot

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 07:18:46 GMT

Meet Cut Paper Character Dakota Noot Artist Dakota Noot turns scissors, paint, and tape into a lively playland of cut paper characters and scenarios, using his body (and maybe yours) as a stage to activate darkly whimsical drawing, painting, performance, video, and installation. Like a paper doll’s accouterments in a quirky dialog with surrealism, Noot’s exploration of queer and Midwestern identity is at once wholesome and subversive, fantastical and funny, pointed and poignant. A parade of human-animal hybrids and intimate releasing of pop-culture pressures, Noot’s world of finely detailed, exuberantly chromatic, and endlessly inventive expressions range from movement videos to full-room, often interactive, multimedia installations. Noot is currently engaged in a week-long residency at Coaxial Arts, which culminates this weekend in two nights of performance around the theme of cooking meat starring his boisterous character Medora, the Queen of Steaks, with the goal, as Noot says, to “laugh, cry, and question why.”Dako...

Stanford golfer Rose Zhang adds to Tiger Woods comparisons The first words from Rose Zhang after the 20-year-old Stanford student capped off one of the more remarkable 13-day stretches in golf were telling.“What is happening?” she said.More tantalizing is what happens next.Hype rules the day in a society built around social media, and Zhang is one of the rare athletes who delivered. The Stanford sophomore won her second straight NCAA title and then 13 days later was awash in wonder when she won the Mizuho Americas Open in her professional debut.Women’s golf has not seen this level of anticipation since Michelle Wie West turned pro at age 15 equipped with blue-chip sponsors like Nike and Sony.Zhang walked, talked and played like it was any other tournament. She is so comfortable with who she is that expectations are not part of the equation.“I honestly didn’t even expect to make the cut,” she said Sunday evening as she sat next to a trophy stuffed with a bouquet of roses. “And the reason why I say this is because I don’t think about my expec...
