SAN FRANCISCO — With their lineup finally nearing full strength, the Giants’ dugout must have felt a sense of relief Sunday when it was Joc Pederson stepping to the plate in the cleanup hole.It was Pederson, in his first at-bat in nearly two weeks, who sent a line drive screaming into right field in the first inning, driving in the Giants’ first run. And it was Pederson, after drawing a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth, who came screaming all the way from first on Mike Yastrzemski’s double to score the go-ahead run in the Giants’ 5-4 win over the Mets on Sunday, clinching a split in the four-game series. After coming out on top Saturday, the Giants have won consecutive games for the first time this season. With offensive contributions from Pederson and Thairo Estrada and a shutdown effort from their maligned relief group, the Giants overcame a short outing from Ross Stripling, who allowed three runs (two earned) over 3⅓ innings while filling Alex Wood...Why Draymond Green offered to come off the bench for Warriors in Game 4

SAN FRANCISCO – The sacrifice that set up the Warriors’ series-tying win on Sunday really came back four nights prior, when Draymond Green walked into Steve Kerr’s office – adrenaline still pumping following the team’s Game 3 victory.Green was forced to watch his teammates cruise to a win without him as he served a controversial one-game suspension for stomping on Kings center Domantas Sabonis. But Green had a suggestion for Kerr after he saw the matchup from a spectator lens.“What do you think about me coming off the bench?” Green asked. The thought had crossed Kerr’s mind before Green had even brought it up. Floor spacing was much better in Game 3 with a four-shooter lineup as opposed to the first two games when the Kings tended to play off Green and Kevon Looney when they shared the floor.Kerr called Green on Saturday and the two weighed the pros and cons of him not starting. At one point, Kerr asked how Green would feel about coming off the bench for the first time in the playoff...Steph Curry’s timeout gaffe nearly gives away Warriors’ Game 4 win

SAN FRANCISCO – As Steph Curry nonchalantly called a last-minute timeout, he initially thought it was “the smartest play in the world” for the Warriors’ sake.“But it turned out not to be. I looked at the bench and everyone was shaking their head,” Curry said Sunday with an uneasy chuckle.Problem was, the Warriors had no timeouts remaining, and Curry’s call threatened to serve as an infamous gaffe in his and the Warriors’ playoff legacy.Curry and the Warriors escaped with a 126-125 win to even their opening-round series against the Sacramento Kings, who host Game 5 on Wednesday night.Curry took Chase Center’s crowd of 18,064 for a wild ride over the final minute. The timeout blunder was sandwiched between him missing two open shots, all of which led to his grand finale on defense, where he rushed over to challenge Harrison Barnes’ last-second miss from 3-point range.Curry finished with a team-high 32 points in nearly 43 minutes of work, including every minute of the fourth quarter, w...Two people stabbed during fight in Pacifica parking lot: police

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Mark Hensby parred the fourth playoff hole after Charlie Wi hit his approach into the water on Sunday to win the Invited Celebrity Classic, his first victory on the PGA Tour Champions. The 51-year-old Australian closed with a 1-under 70 at Las Colinas, making birdie on the par-5 18th in regulation to match Wi at 12-under 201 through 54 holes. In the playoff, Hensby got up-and-down for par on the 18th after his approach came up short of the green and rolled back into the water. The pair traded pars again on 18 and on the par-3 17th before playing 18 a third time, and this time Wi found the water.Hensby hit a wedge within 10 feet and two-putted for the win, his first since he beat Henrik Stenson in a playoff in the 2005 Scandinavian Masters on the European tour.“It’s nice, obviously, to win on this tour,” Hensby said. “I think when you win anywhere these days, it’s an accomplishment.”Hensby has six professional victories, five of them in playoffs, includ...Stars even series with 3-2 win vs. Wild on Seguin’s PP pair

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Tyler Seguin scored two power-play goals and Jake Oettinger made 33 saves in a brilliant show in his home state to help the Dallas Stars bounce back from a lopsided loss and beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 in Game 4 on Sunday night to even their first-round NHL playoff series.Evgenii Dadonov gave the Stars a two-score lead early in the third period just 8 seconds after escaping the penalty box, his third goal of the series. John Klingberg scored for the Wild less than three minutes later against his former team right after a goal-line block on the other end. Both of Seguin’s goals followed questionable penalties on Minnesota’s feisty right wing Marcus Foligno, who was called for tripping with 4:49 remaining before Seguin delivered his third goal of the series.Frederick Gaudreau gave the Wild another opening on his power-play goal with 1:20 left, but Oettinger didn’t budge.

The political dust storm over 14 books removed from high school libraries in Spotsylvania County continues as the American Civil Liberties Union labels the action unlawful and unconstitutional. The group is now petitioning the Virginia state board to intercede. In March, 14 books were removed from high school libraries after a parent complained they were sexually explicit. Among those books were “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, “Sold” by Patricia McCormick, and “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison.More books have been reportedly added to the list since the initial order.Though a book committee of over 70 parents and educators within Spotsylvania County Public Schools system reviewed the books and deemed them appropriate for high school age students, Superintendent Mark Taylor made the decision to remove them anyway. In recent years, a large wave of conservative activists around the U.S. have made efforts to remove books from public school systems that include materia...Latest news
