House GOP leaders' furious scramble to secure the support needed to pass a debt limit bill is not going well. On Tuesday evening, the prognosis for the package was looking even worse than the shaky ground it stood on before lawmakers left Washington last week.A small but consequential number of GOP lawmakers on Tuesday said they intend to vote against the party’s debt limit package if it hits the floor without substantial changes — changes Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is vowing not to make as he aims to pass the bill this week. The critics’ opposition appears to be enough to sink the bill, which would be an embarrassing defeat for McCarthy in the first big legislative test of his young Speakership, while also weakening the Republicans' hand in the coming fight with President Biden over how to raise the debt ceiling and prevent a government default this summer. For at least one member who has long been resistant to the bill, a whip attempt fumbled.“I had a meeting ...Burst pipes at St. Louis apartment cause unlivable conditions, resident says

FLORISSANT, Mo. - Congresswoman Cori Bush has introduced legislation calling for the cleanup of Jana Elementary and the testing of all schools in the Hazelwood School District for radioactive waste. Similar legislation was filed by U.S. Senator Josh Hawley, who plans on asking for unanimous passage of his bill on Wednesday. The news comes just as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released a report calling Jana Elementary safe. The USACE findings have been at odds with a private firm’s determination that harmful levels of radioactive waste were found. Ashley Bernaugh is president of the Jana Elementary PTA. She said testing by the USACE does not meet the highest standards for safety. “Their mission has never been health-focused,” Bernaugh said. At this point, the Hazelwood School District does not plan to reopen Jana. Students have been sent to other schools in the district. Some parents said their children have been heartbroken over the transition. ...Head of a major law firm bought real estate from Gorsuch

WASHINGTON — One month after Neil Gorsuch was appointed to the Supreme Court in April 2017, he and two partners finally sold a vacation property they had been trying to offload for nearly two years. But when he reported the sale the next year, he left blank a field asking the identity of the buyer.County real estate records in Colorado show that Brian L. Duffy, CEO of Greenberg Traurig, a sprawling law firm that frequently has business before the court, and his wife, Kari Duffy, bought the property. The buyer’s identity — and Gorsuch’s decision not to disclose it — was reported earlier on Tuesday by Politico. Although experts said that the omission did not violate the law, they added that it underscored the need for ethics reforms given the intensifying scrutiny on financial entanglements at the Supreme Court and renewed calls by Democratic lawmakers for tightened rules.ProPublica reported this month that Justice Clarence Thomas had not disclosed that he had repeatedly re...Charges will be dropped against man who struck ex-SF fire commissioner, statement says
