(CNN) — Kevin McCarthy will not run for speaker again after the House ousted him from the top leadership post in a historic vote on Tuesday, a move that threatens to plunge House Republicans into even further chaos and turmoil.“I will not seek to run again for Speaker of the House,” McCarthy wrote on X. “I may have lost a vote today, but I fought for what I believe in—and I believe in America. It has been an honor to serve.”The House will now need to elect a new speaker, but there is no clear alternative to McCarthy who would have the support needed to win the gavel. No House speaker has ever before been ousted through the passage of a resolution to remove them.Immediately following the vote, GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry, a top McCarthy ally, was named interim speaker and the House went into recess as Republicans scrambled to find a path forward. The vote to oust McCarthy and his decision not to run again marks a major escalation in tensions for a House GOP conference that has been&...Extra car lane on Arborway won’t lead to removal of bike lane, DCR says

Placing a temporary car lane on the Arborway will not be coming at the expense of a bike lane, according to the state. The new travel lane is being added to a 500-foot outbound section of the Arborway from Murray Circle to the main entrance of the Arnold Arboretum, while a bike lane is being maintained for cyclists, the Department of Conservation and Recreation told the Herald on Tuesday.DCR’s clarification came after cyclists and road safety advocates blasted the agency, as they feared the car lane would have eliminated a bike lane on that section of the Arborway. But that is not the case, a spokeswoman said.“This temporary lane is intended to address local concerns about traffic as DCR continues to work with the community and stakeholders on the Arborway Improvement Project, which is intended to improve bike and pedestrian access to the Arborway,” the spokeswoman said.Advocates expressed concern, confusion and anger after DCR announced Monday on X that it would be closing lanes bet...Calls for changes to Bridgewater State Hospital come with dark details

Bridgewater State Hospital is more like a prison than a mental health hospital, lawmakers are being told.Members of the Legislature’s Justice Reform Caucus said as it is currently run and managed by contractors for the state Department of Correction, the state hospital is more akin to the jails the department’s crews are trained to operate.“It doesn’t feel like a hospital at all, it feels like a prison,” state Rep. Mary Keefe said.Bridgewater State Hospital houses hundreds of males, all exhibiting severe mental illnesses, many but not all of whom have been convicted of crimes.Legislation offered by state Rep. Ruth Balser, H2985 or An Act transferring Bridgewater State Hospital from the Department of Correction to the Department of Mental Health, would do exactly as its name suggests and transfer Bridgewater from the DOC to DMH, where the staff has expertise in the care of those with mental illness.“This bill is so important because the people who are at Bridgewater State Hospi...More than 1,200 families entered Massachusetts emergency shelter since August
