Rock, Rock, Rockaway…Everybody has a few recollections about how they first came to connect with and own tangible music. Beyond old-timers who paid a penny for eight albums through Columbia House mailings, or parents/siblings passing along their dusty classic rock collections, it all comes down to the local record shop.As a kid of the ‘70s and ‘80s, our first foray consisted of K-Tel disco and mellow gold compilations we saw advertised on TV. Collecting comps and “45s” as we called them (now referred to as singles or seven inches) became a semi-passionate pastime even though our first turntable was basically a plastic toy-like box with a needle. Spinning singles like Lipps Inc’s “Funkytown” and The B-52’s “Rock Lobster,” over and over again, the player was abandoned when it broke and we moved onto a boombox. But even as we started recording off the radio and making mixtapes, buying the hot new album by our favorite artist was exciting – on vinyl, cassettes and later, CDs. We a...Tri-Valley bids farewell to water restrictions as end of drought emergency declared

LIVERMORE— From barren lands to blooming hope, eastern Alameda County has finally turned the tide on its prolonged drought emergency. In a unanimous decision, the Zone 7 board of directors has declared an end to the drought emergency while unanimously lifting mandatory conservation requirements for the Tri-Valley, marking an end to years of harsh water scarcity. The announcement came during a board meeting on Wednesday. The 2020-21 water year was the driest year on record for the Tri-Valley, which includes Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore. In March 2022, water allocation was cut to 5% from 15%, requiring that Zone 7 shift to relying on the local groundwater basin to carry the Tri-Valley through the drought year, according to a press release.Zone 7 Water Agency, which supplies water to all of eastern Alameda County and its quarter of a million residents and businesses, mandated a 15% reduction in water usage in the fall of 2021. The wholesale water distributor did so in response to se...The ‘Champagne of Beers’? France would like a word

By Samuel Petrequin | Associated PressBRUSSELS — The guardians of Champagne will let no one take the name of the bubbly beverage in vain, not even a U.S. beer behemoth. For years, Miller High Life has used the “Champagne of Beers” slogan. This week, that appropriation became impossible to swallow. At the request of the trade body defending the interests of houses and growers of the northeastern French sparkling wine, Belgian customs crushed more than 2,000 cans of Miller High Life advertised as such. The Comité Champagne asked for the destruction of a shipment of 2,352 cans on the grounds that the century-old motto used by the American brewery infringes the protected designation of origin “Champagne.”The consignment was intercepted in the Belgian port of Antwerp in early February, a spokesperson at the Belgian Customs Administration said on Friday, and was destined for Germany.Molson Coors Beverage Co., which owns the Miller High Life brand, does not currently e...A California county dismissed 1,700-plus criminal cases in 6 months. Who’s to blame?

To say the wheels of justice turn slowly assumes the wheels move at all. They ground to a halt more than 1,700 times in Riverside County since October. That’s the number of criminal cases — including felonies — thrown out by county Superior Court judges in the past six months. In most cases, this means defendants charged with crimes from misdemeanor DUI to child sexual assault — as well as crime victims — don’t get their day in court, though felonies can be refiled.District Attorney Mike Hestrin blames the dismissals on inflexible judges who he said failed to manage an onslaught of cases after expiration of a statewide order that helped courts handle the coronavirus pandemic.Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin talks Monday, April 10, 2023, about recent criminal case dismissals and why it’s happening. To be fair, country singer-songwriter Ronnie Dunn admits straight away that he only vaguely remembers playing the very first Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio back in 2007.“Back then, before we took our hiatus, we were running so hard that everything was a blur,” Dunn, half of country music duo Brooks & Dunn, said during a recent phone interview. He and his longtime musical partner Kix Brooks will be back to play the three-day fest at the Empire Polo Club on Sunday, April 30, going on just before closing headliner Chris Stapleton.“I had people here in my office telling me, ‘You played the first one,’ and maybe I shouldn’t tell anyone that I don’t remember it, but the shows out West and in California, they always turn into a blur because they are so much fun,” he continued. “The crowds are so much different out there than anywhere else. I remember calling home to my wife one time and she still makes fun of me for this, but the first few times we were out in California, I...Man suspected of sexually assaulting children in Southern California hotels for decades
