Yamamoto’s contract with Dodgers includes 2 opt outs, but timing depends on elbow health

NEW YORK (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto will have two opportunities to opt out of his record $325 million, 12-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, although the timing is tied to his pitching elbow’s health. If Yamamoto has Tommy John surgery or is on the injured list for a right elbow injury for 134 consecutive service days from 2024-29, he would have the right to opt out after the 2031 and 2033 World Series, according to terms of the deal obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday. If he avoids Tommy John surgery and doesn’t miss that much time with an elbow issue during that window, he can instead opt out after the 2029 and 2031 World Series. In the first scenario, the Dodgers also would gain a $10 million conditional option for 2036 with no buyout.Yamamoto does not have the right to block trades but could opt out of the contract after the end of any season in which he is traded. Los Angeles announced the agreement two weeks after signing two-way star Shohei Ohtani to...Dalvin Cook being waived by the Jets with 1 game left in the season

The New York Jets are waiving running back Dalvin Cook before the final game of the season, according to Cook’s agents LAA Sports & Entertainment. The 28-year-old Cook had a disappointing tenure with the Jets, who signed the four-time Pro Bowl selection to a one-year deal worth $7 million — including $5.8 million guaranteed — during the summer.NFL Network first reported Tuesday that the sides mutually agreed to part ways, citing Cook’s agents, who confirmed the move to The Associated Press. Cook will go through waivers and would become a free agent if he goes unclaimed. After Aaron Rodgers was lost for the season with a torn left Achilles tendon four snaps into his debut with the Jets, Cook’s role in New York’s offense never materialized. He has a career-low 214 yards rushing on 67 carries and no touchdowns, and was recently surpassed by rookie Israel Abanikanda as the backup to Breece Hall in the Jets’ backfield. Cook also has just 15 catches for 78 yards ...The Saints realized their potential in Week 17, but was it too late?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Now that the New Orleans Saints have avoided the dreaded fate of playing meaningless late-season football, all they can do is try to replicate their most recent performance — easily among their best during an up-and-down 2023 campaign — and hope that fortune favors them. The Saints demonstrated during their 23-13 victory at Tampa Bay on Sunday that they’re capable of seizing control of a game against a playoff-contending rival, overcoming injuries and winning convincingly with their season on the line.“Everything was clicking; everything worked out,” tight end Juwan Johnson said. “The defense was playing lights out and the offense was playing really well. Just from the first drive, we were hitting on all cylinders.” New Orleans found the end zone on its opening drive and remained in front, building a 20-point third-quarter lead that proved too much for the NFC South-leading Buccaneers to overcome. The Saints’ defense produced four Tampa Bay turnove...Se acerca una tormenta que podría traer nieve a la región el sábado

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, whose murder conviction in the 1970s killing of a teenager in Connecticut was overturned, is suing the lead police investigator in the case and the town of Greenwich for alleged malicious prosecution, civil rights violations and other claimed wrongdoing.Skakel, 63, a nephew of Robert F. Kennedy’s widow, Ethel Kennedy, was found guilty in 2002 of the 1975 bludgeoning death of Martha Moxley, who lived across the street from the Skakel family in wealthy Greenwich and whose body was found in her family’s backyard. Both Skakel and Moxley were 15 at the time of her death. The Connecticut Supreme Court overturned Skakel’s conviction in 2018, after he had served more than 11 years in prison, saying his defense lawyer failed to present evidence of an alibi. A state prosecutor announced in 2020 that Skakel would not be put on trial again and the murder charge was dropped. The new lawsuit alleges the investigato...MBTA says operator error to blame after woman says her leg got caught in train door

A scary situation recently played out for a mother and son in Medford as the mother said her leg got caught in an MBTA train door.Rebecca Mason said the incident happened at the Medford/Tufts station on the Green Line on New Year’s Day. Mason later spoke to 7NEWS, describing her experience. “I put one foot on the platform and had my hand and leg to help him down and the door suddenly closed on my leg,” she said. Mason, 36, was holding her son’s hand when her leg got caught in the door, leaving her on one side of the door and her son on the other. She said she let go of her son so he wouldn’t get hurt and desperately looked around for help. “The people who were on the train behind us were trying to pull the doors open, but they couldn’t do it,” Mason said. Eventually, Mason said an MBTA employee ran over and began pulling on the train doors while telling train passengers to hit an emergency release button near the door. Finally, the doors spru...Chicago Cubs announce Craig Counsell’s staff, featuring bench coach Ryan Flaherty: ‘I’ve always had great respect for him’

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell didn’t know Ryan Flaherty well when he began the search for his bench coach.Counsell actually liked that aspect of the process, though Flaherty had a connection to general manager Carter Hawkins, his teammate at Vanderbilt. However, Counsell was more interested in how well Flaherty had done his job the last four years, explaining last month that he was looking forward “to a new and a fresh set of eyes there to help me see different things” with Flaherty. He officially became one of four additions to the Cubs’ 2024 coaching staff Tuesday as Counsell’s right-hand man in the dugout. Flaherty’s eight-year big-league career ended after 2019, and the 37-year-old’s transition to the coaching ranks led him to the Padres, with whom he most recently served as bench coach last season.“I’ve always had great respect for him,” Counsell said at the winter meetings. “He’s done really good thin...van Riemsdyk, Bruins best Blue Jackets on the road, 4-1

The Bruins may not have been at their best at all times on Tuesday night in Columbus, but they didn’t have to be to take care of an undermanned Blue Jackets team. The B’s received goals from four different players – and one each from all three third line players – to put away the Jackets, 4-1, at Nationwide Arena. James van Riemsdyk had a three-point night – a goal and two assists – to lead the B’s offensively and Linus Ullmark made 25 saves. After sputtering into the Christmas break, the B’s have won the four games since the three-day haitus. The first period was a low-event 20 minutes in which the B’s were outshot 12-5 despite having the only two power plays. The only decent scoring chance they had was on an in-tight spin move by David Pastrnak but he was too close to Spencer Martin to lift it over the goalie. The B’s did nothing with the man advantages – gifted to them by a Columbus delay of game and an after-the-whistle punch – and the Blue Jackets...Latest news
