Timberwolves: Jaden McDaniels’ first game back from calf injury was a good one

Timberwolves: Jaden McDaniels’ first game back from calf injury was a good one One positive from Minnesota’s debacle Monday in Atlanta was the return of Jaden McDaniels. The wing — playing in his first game after straining his calf in the preseason opener in Abu Dhabi — finished with 12 points on 5 for 6 shooting while serving as one of the Wolves’ few apt defenders. That all came in 24 minutes, as McDaniels is playing limited minutes while working himself back.“He looked good,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters. “It was unfortunate he was on a minutes restriction, because we really could’ve used him out there guarding (Dejounte) Murray, but he spent the bulk of his minutes guarding (Trae) Young and he did a good job.”McDaniels said it “felt good to be back, just playing basketball.” He noted he found a good rhythm early. The early buckets helped, as did the Timberwolves’ ramp-up strategy.“I’ve been playing a little bit before I got to play in a game — like playing in stay-in-shape league (after practice) and stuff, so I’ve been able to hoop a litt...

Zeynep Tufekci: Past lies about war in the Middle East are getting in the way of the truth today

Zeynep Tufekci: Past lies about war in the Middle East are getting in the way of the truth today Moshe Lavi, whose relatives have been taken hostage by Hamas, recently talked to a group of New York Times journalists about his family’s agony. His pained voice turned to anger when he recounted encountering disbelief that Hamas committed terrible atrocities when it attacked Israel. Lavi seemed especially bewildered by people “arguing over the semantics” of whether people were beheaded or their heads fell off or even whether there were hostages in the Gaza Strip. In one particularly gruesome twist, there’s been an uproar over whether Hamas had beheaded babies — an unverified claim that President Joe Biden repeated before the White House walked it back and has been subject to much discussion since.Indeed, since Hamas did murder children and take others as hostages, should it get credit if it didn’t also behead them? It’s an appalling thought. Some of this skepticism is surely the result of antisemitism. But that’s not all that’s going on.One key reason for some of the incidents of doub...

Avs coach Jared Bednar says a “little mental break” could be good for goalie Alexandar Georgiev

Avs coach Jared Bednar says a “little mental break” could be good for goalie Alexandar Georgiev The Colorado Avalanche began this season with a desire to play Alexandar Georgiev a little less after he carried so much of the workload near the end of last season, but the early-season schedule has allowed him to play every game so far. That streak of eight straight starts will end Wednesday night when the Avs welcome the St. Louis Blues to Ball Arena. Ivan Prosvetov, acquired on waivers just before the regular season began, is going to make his first start.Georgiev began the season with six straight wins, and still leads the NHL in that category. The Avs have dropped back-to-back games without scoring a goal, but the coaching staff saw a chance to finally give their No. 1 goalie a break.“We’ve discussed it over the last few starts, especially,” Bednar said after practice Tuesday. “At 6-0, you’re kinda like, ‘Well, this isn’t that taxing of a schedule.’ Then you get the extra day in Buffalo. But now I think his last two games probably...

Kiszla: Do Sean Payton and crazy-rich Waltons have the stomach for rebuilding the Broncos? There were 12,281 good reasons the Broncos didn’t blow up a last-place team at the NFL trade deadline, all of them as conspicuous in their absence from a stunning upset of Kansas City as no-show Taylor Swift. The crazy-rich Waltons didn’t spend $4.65 billion on a sports franchise, then double down on a bid for greatness with outrageous investments in quarterback Russell Wilson and coach Sean Payton, only to become a league laughing stock and look like football novices without a clue on how to succeed in the NFLWhile there were undoubtedly multiple factors why receiver Jerry Jeudy, linebacker Josey Jewell and a host of teammates rumored to be on the trade block are still here in Denver, there’s a whiff of unavoidable truth in the air.It smells as if the most loyal fans in sports have the Broncos running a wee bit scared. At no time in the last 50 years has our local NFL franchise held such a tenuous grip on Denver as a Broncos town, as evidenced by more than 12,000 empty seats in Empow...

Veterans Voices: Documenting the stories of surving WWII veterans A local man has made it his life’s work to document the stories of veterans from World War II from around the globe while the few remaining alive are able to tell their stories. Southern California native Rishi Sharma said he has always had a passion for the history of World War II. What started out as a high school project, speaking with veterans about their days in combat, turned into an adventurous career that’s taken him around the world.  “We’ve done interviews in Canada, all over the UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, the Netherlands,” he told KTLA’s Kareen Wynter.  A project seven years in the making, the 25-year-old continues to spotlight these unsung surviving heroes, some of whom are telling their stories for the very first time.  On a recent morning in Westlake Village, Sharma’s old neighborhood, he was reconnecting retired Army Staff Sergeant Jack Moran. Sharma first met the now 98-year-old World War II veteran when he was in high school, riding his ...
