LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Parishioners mourned the dead and prayed for the missing Sunday in Hawaii churches as communities began looking ahead to a long recovery from last week’s wildfire that demolished a historic Maui town and killed more than 90 people.Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina was spared from the flames that wiped out most of the surrounding community, but with search-and-recovery efforts ongoing, its parishioners attended Mass about 10 miles up the road, with the Bishop of Honolulu, the Rev. Clarence “Larry” Silva, presiding.Taufa Samisani said his uncle, aunt, cousin and the cousin’s 7-year-old son were found dead inside a burned car. Samisani’s wife, Katalina, said the family would draw comfort from Silva’s reference to the Bible story of how Jesus’ disciple Peter walked on water and was saved from drowning.“If Peter can walk on water, yes we can. We will get to the shore,” she said, her voice quivering.During the Mass, Silva read a message from P...Johnson chooses Larry Snelling to be next CPD Superintendent

Any potential shutdown of the Dakota Access oil pipeline could literally derail grain and ethanol shipments in the Midwest, potentially costing the agriculture industry billions of dollars. For years, a pending environmental impact statement has been hanging over the Dakota Access Pipeline, which takes oil from western North Dakota to a terminus in Illinois.Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D. (Contributed)Some fear the outcome of the EIS could affect the operation of the pipeline.A study by Elaine Kub, a commodity market analyst in South Dakota, showed the Midwest agricultural sector could suffer more than $3 billion in annual losses.“A sudden shift like that would be really detrimental to rail congestion,” Kub said in an interview. Her analysis of the Dakota Access impact came out in July, examining what would happen if the oil flowing through the Dakota Access pipe stopped. But Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., says such a shutdown is unlikely.Hoeven said he met with representatives from the Army Corps...‘Just waiting for a call’: Royce Lewis says he’s ready to return to Twins

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – Officials are urging residents to stay out of the water at Rockford Beach Park, after a disappearance led to another fatal drowning on Saturday. Officials in the county say part of the problem is how residents are accessing the bluffs above the water. It was a dangerous and risky walk along a cluster of rock rapids, ultimately leading to the drowning of a man believed to be in his mid-30s.“What we believe happened is that he was walking along this rock rapid area, possibly slipped on the rocks, and went into the water,” Chief John Barton, High Ridge Fire Protection District, said. The fire chief compared the rip of the current to a washing machine.“It’s easy to get trapped in that current, and the current is just like a washing machine,” he said. “It’s just going to continue to churn over and over again.” Safety questions arise as unidentified man drowns at familiar scene Barton said even strong swimmers underestimate the rapids. It was the same instance that ...Rockies swept by Dodgers, strike out 49 times, walk twice in four games

It ended with a strikeout-filled reality check at Dodger Stadium.Los Angeles beat the Rockies 7-3 Sunday afternoon to complete a four-game sweep in which Colorado hitters struck out 49 times and walked only twice. That’s right, twice. The Dodgers extended their season-best winning streak to eight games. Colorado fell to 1-8 vs. L.A. this season. When the Rockies traded veterans Mike Moustakas, C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk for pitching prospects, it ensured that their young players were going to get plenty of at-bats. It also ensured that there were going to be Jolly Green Giant-sized growing pains for young players, such as rookie Nolan Jones, who went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts Sunday.“We (only) had five hits and we need more than that,” manager Bud Black told reporters in Los Angeles, repeating what’s becoming a common postgame refrain. “We scored six runs in four games, that...Bailey’s 2-run homer in 10th gives Giants 3-2 win over Rangers

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Patrick Bailey hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and the San Francisco Giants overcame a blown save by All-Star closer Camilo Doval to beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Sunday, stopping a four-game losing streak. The 24-year-old Bailey became the youngest Giants player to hit a game-ending home run since 22-year-old Pablo Sandoval in 2009.“Fantastic but it’s not surprising because since he got to the big league level all he’s done is come up in big moments, make big plays, do a really good job of leading our pitching staff,” manager Gabe Kapler said.San Francisco, which struck out a season-high 17 times, had lost six of its previous seven games. Texas had won 10 of 11.“We really needed it,” Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb said. “Collectively as a group need to start playing a little bit better.
