Replacing the Texas-Oklahoma hype could be difficult

The Big 12 is losing its marquee matchup when the Red River Rivalry is played Saturday for the final time under the league’s umbrella. No. 3 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma head to the Southeastern Conference in 2024, the same year the Big 12 expands to 16 schools in what the league hopes will be an exciting launch of a new era. But gone will be its most hyped regular-season game, along with the Sooners’ annual Bedlam meeting with Oklahoma State in a league with no other rivalries on par with those two.“The spotlight of college football” is on this game, said Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who also had stops in the Pac-12 and in the SEC. He calls Texas-Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas “the best setting in college football” with the howling fans split between orange and crimson. The storied series dates to 1900 and it will belong to the SEC soon enough. It’s one that the Big 12 shouldn’t rush to replace, said Vassilis Dalakas, a sports marketing researcher at San ...Biden tries to reassure allies of continued US support for Ukraine after Congress drops aid request

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden gathered other world powers Tuesday to coordinate on Ukraine as it battles Russia in a war now almost 20 months long — a deliberate show of U.S. support at a time when the future of its aid is entangled with a volatile faction of House Republicans who want to cut off money to Kyiv. The phone call — convened by the United States and joined by key allies in Europe as well as the leaders of Canada and Japan — was held three days after Biden signed legislation hastily sent to him by Congress that kept the federal government funded but left off billions in funding for Ukraine’s war effort that the White House had vigorously backed. All the countries that participated in the call stressed that their backing of Ukraine remains unchanged, and no one questioned whether U.S. support of Kyiv was in doubt, according to the White House. But the administration sternly warned Tuesday that Congress must not let the flow of aid be disrupted, lest Russian P...Veteran coach Louis van Gaal is back at Ajax as an external advisor to the struggling Amsterdam club

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Veteran coach Louis van Gaal is coming out of soccer retirement to help get Dutch power Ajax back on track after its worst start to a season in decades. The Amsterdam club, a four-time European champion, announced late Tuesday that 72-year-old Van Gaal will advise the Ajax Supervisory Board “on football technical matters.”Under new coach Maurice Steijn and with a roster packed with new and inexperienced players signed over the summer, Ajax is 15th in the 18-team Eredivisie after five matches. Ajax also struggled last season in the aftermath of the departure of Erik ten Haag to Manchester United.“I want to help Ajax. I currently spend a big part of my life in Portugal, and this can be well combined with my role as an external advisor,” Van Gaal said in a statement on the Ajax website. Van Gaal said the club must find its way “back up to the top, and we all have to contribute to that.”Van Gaal, who said last year he was being treated for prostate cancer, has been...This is the fastest-selling license plate in Colorado history

DENVER (KDVR) -- A license plate designed by a Coloradan under 13 years old has shattered records to become the fastest-selling license plate in state history, and it only took two months for it to happen. The popular plate was one of two winning designs in the Historic Colorado Contest, which was held earlier this year to honor the state's 150th Anniversary. The plate that is flying off the shelves, with 5,700 ordered to date, was based on a design submitted in the "U13" category of the contest by Denver resident Calista Blaschke. All the entries in that category were designed by Coloradans age 13 and under. When will Denver see the first snow of the season? Calista took inspiration from Pikes Peak, fortune hunters and the official state bird -- the lark bunting -- for the colorful design.Calista said she was thrilled to learn her design was so popular. "I never expected to win the Historic Colorado Contest, let alone design a license plate that so many people like enough to put on ...Colorado high court to hear case against Christian baker who refused LGBTQ cake

DENVER (AP) — On the heels of a U.S. Supreme Court victory this summer for a graphic artist who didn’t want to design wedding websites for same-sex couples, Colorado’s highest court said Tuesday it will now hear the case of a Christian baker who refused to make a cake celebrating a gender transition. The announcement by the Colorado Supreme Court is the latest development in the yearslong legal saga involving Jack Phillips and LGBTQ+ rights. Phillips won a partial victory before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 after refusing to make a gay couple’s wedding cake. He was later sued by Autumn Scardina, a transgender woman, after Phillips and his suburban Denver bakery refused to make a pink cake with blue frosting for her birthday and to celebrate her gender transition. Scardina, an attorney, said she brought the lawsuit to “challenge the veracity” of Phillips' statements that he would serve LGBTQ+ customers. Her attorney said her cake order was not a “set up” intended to file a lawsuit....1 killed in crash near Aurora middle school
