The Avs are trying to rebuild their farm system.Cornell hockey defenseman Sam Malinski signed a two-year contract with the Avalanche on Thursday morning, the second NCAA free agent to sign with the organization in as many days.Like Western Michigan’s Jason Polin, who signed Wednesday, Malinski was his college team’s captain during the 2022-23 season. He led Cornell to a 2-0-first-round upset of the DU Pioneers in the NCAA Regional this month. The Avalanche’s prospect pool was ranked last in the NHL by The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler in January, a natural toll taken by Colorado’s all-in approach to win the 2022 Stanley Cup championship.A year later, president of hockey operations Joe Sakic and general manager Chris MacFarland are trying to walk the fine line between maintaining the win-now mindset while a championship window remains open and investing in the organization’s future. Former top prospects Bo Byram and Alex Newhook are no longer prospects. ...California storm: See how much rain fell in your neighborhood

Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 10:23:19 GMT
Boop Oop A Doop: Rarely has an artist been so perfectly named. “Betty Who” is an appropriate moniker for the Australian synth-pop artist. Not because she’s an anonymous figure in the modern, brutal pop world but because she seems to have been spending the first few years of her career discovering herself, working out what she wants her signature sound to be and, of course, growing up. Hence, her last EP was called Betty, Pt. 1 and her album is called Betty, despite the fact that they’re preceded by two albums and two EPs for RCA Records. She’s an indie artist now, going it alone, and she’s at the beginning of a new chapter. Shea Couleé also plays. We spoke to Who in 2018, and she told us that, “The place that I’m at in my life right now, personally as well as professionally, I’ve gone through a lot of changes. When you’re 20-something, you think, ‘This is my grown-up life now.’ I think most people have experienced that or are going to. This EP, in a lot of ways, is very representativ...Notorious ‘drunk ranger’ gets 6 years in prison for crashing into California vacationers’ van

A Fortuna man who made headlines with a previous drunken incident was sentenced last week to six years in prison for a crash that almost cost a teenage girl her leg.Tyson Randall Young, 41, pleaded guilty last month to two felony counts concerning the injury he caused while driving drunk last summer, the Mendocino County district attorney said.On the evening of Aug. 12, 2022, Young’s Toyota Tundra crossed the center line of Highway 101 in Mendocino County and hit the minivan of an Arcata family returning from a Disneyland trip.A 15-year-old girl in the van suffered a leg injury that doctors described as “partial amputation by trauma.” Her mother was also injured, as was Young.Young’s blood alcohol content was 0.27%, prosecutors said.It was the second arrest in which he had blood alcohol three times the legal limit. In August 2014, a driver in Humboldt Redwoods State Park found Young, then a state parks ranger, passed out in uniform and in his official truck w...Freediver sues Netflix claiming ‘No Limits’ film depicted him as a murderer

By Joe Schneider | BloombergA Cuban-American freediver who set 21 world records sued Netflix Inc. for defamation, claiming the media giant wrongly depicted him as a murderer in the 2022 film No Limits. The film is presented as a fictional work, inspired by real events, but Francisco Ferreras Rodriguez claims it’s very similar to what happened in his life, with the exception that the film’s lead character, Pascal Gautier, deliberately killed his wife, a fellow freediver. A picture and the name of Ferraras’s wife, Audrey, who drowned in a record attempt dive, appear at the end of the film.“Many viewers reasonably concluded that Ferreras behaved in real life in the same way that the Gautier character behaves in the film,” Ferreras’s lawyer Alexander Rufus-Isaacs wrote in the complaint, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court. “There was a storm of online abuse directed at him by viewers who believed that he had murdered Audrey.”Netflix’s docudramas have landed the company in court ...EA Sports announces 6% staffing cut

Thieves have made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in artillery equipment, unspecified “weapons systems,” and specialized ammunition meant for U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq, according to exclusive documents obtained by The Intercept. The thefts, which occurred on, or in transit to, far-flung U.S. outposts in the region, remain unsolved. They are just the latest evidence of a persistent problem that has allowed enemy forces from ISIS in Iraq to the Taliban in Afghanistan to arm themselves — and even kill Americans and their foreign partners — at U.S. taxpayer expense. The previously unreported thefts illuminate America’s shadow wars in the region, where a U.S. contractor was killed and six other Americans were wounded last week in a suicide drone assault on a U.S. base in northeast Syria. The kamikaze airstrike on the outpost known as RLZ was one of roughly 80 attacks on American bases in Iraq and Syria since January 2021 that the U.S. has blamed on Iranian proxy groups.
