The Wild returned from Sweden on Monday with a five-game losing streak (0-3-2) and a lot of serious questions about the future of this team’s season. They’re not simply underachieving; they’re one of the worst teams in the NHL.“Things can change,” general manager Bill Guerin said during an interview with the Pioneer Press on Tuesday. “We’re better than a lot of teams that are ahead of us. We need to focus.”But it has to start, like, now.The Wild have only played 17 of 82 regular-season games, but they head into Friday’s 7 p.m. puck drop against Colorado at Xcel Energy Center 11 points behind first-place Dallas in the Central Division, and five points out of Western Conference playoff position.Guerin and coach Dean Evason said they liked a lot more of what they saw during a 2-1 shootout loss to Ottawa and 3-2 overtime loss to Toronto in last weekend’s Global Series games, and the team certainly looked better than it did in an 8-3 loss to Dallas in its last game before leaving for Sto...Gophers football’s path to bowl game with 5-7 record remains possible

The Gophers football team is assured only more game this season: the Battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe against Wisconsin at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday afternoon.“We got one week guaranteed left, so let’s go make the most of it,” defensive end Danny Striggow said after a 37-3 loss to No. 2 Ohio State last weekend. “It’s against a team like Wisconsin, where you have so much on the line.”If the Gophers (5-6 overall) win, they will retain the Axe for three consecutive years for the first time since the mid-1980s. If they win the rivalry game, they will reach bowl eligibility with six wins. But there’s a chance that even if the Gophers, two-point underdog on Saturday, lose to the Badgers and fall to 5-7 overall, Minnesota might still advance to a bowl game because there might not be enough six-win outfits to fill out the full bowl schedule. Here’s the breakdown:Total bowl teams needed: 82Teams qualified with 6 wins: 67Open spots remaining: 15Current 5-win teams: 24If the Gophers lose t...Longtime Twins announcer Dick Bremer given lifetime achievement award
