COOK COUNTY, Ill. — An Arlington Heights woman accused of setting her own apartment on fire has been charged, police say.According to Arlington Heights police, the fire started in 51-year-old Paula Cristina Sanchez's apartment in the 300 block of East Seegers Road on Thursday afternoon.Following the fire, investigators say evidence was recovered from the scene that indicated Sanchez had intentionally started the blaze. Security guard hospitalized after shooting in Grand Crossing Village inspectors deemed four nearby units uninhabitable due to damage from the fire, smoke and water.Sanchez has been charged with one count of aggravated arson. CHICAGO — An investigation is underway on Saturday night after a shooting outside of a funeral home on the city's Southwest Side, police say.According to Chicago police, two people were injured in the shooting, which happened around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in the 5100 block of South Western Avenue in Gage Park. 8-year-old boy killed, woman injured after stabbing in Plainfield Township Officers say a 32-year-old man was shot in the arm and was taken to the hospital in fair condition. The second victim, a 72-year-old woman, suffered gunshot wounds to the leg, arm and side of her body. Police say she was taken to the hospital in good condition.Officers later recovered a vehicle in the 4200 block of West Gladys Avenue that police believe was used in the shooting. Dernbach | Sahan Journal / For MPR NewsMinnesota’s social studies standards are getting a long-awaited makeover — if an administrative law judge approves them this winter.On Sept. 25, the Minnesota Department of Education released a document outlining the “need and reasonableness” for the new standards.That may sound dry and bureaucratic. But the document marks the beginning of the end of a sometimes contentious three-year process that could result in major changes to the way Minnesota students learn social studies.If approved, the proposed changes will incorporate ethnic studies into state social studies standards for the first time. Those standards would go into effect in the 2026–27 school year.Minnesota law requires the revision of academic standards every 10 years. A 36-member committee that included teachers, parents, university professors and tribal representatives developed the proposed social studies standards. ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues weathered through their second game of the season very similar to their first. Tight through three periods, stout goaltending paved the way to a shootout. This time around, for a win. The Blues defeated the Seattle Kraken in their home opener on Saturday at the Enterprise Center. The Blues won their fourth consecutive home opener. ST. LOUIS - Two people were shot and one has died after a shooting Saturday evening in St. Louis' Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood. The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Gamble Street. Investigators say a 23-year-old man was fatally shot.
