La Jolla restaurant robbed two days after grand opening SAN DIEGO -- Just days after the grand opening event, a man broke into the Beeside Balcony La Jolla early Saturday morning and stole the restaurant's cash register.Beeside Balcony chef and owner, Christophe Cevasco, first started serving his specialties at the Del Mar location with La Jolla next in line. After years of hard work, he was excited for the opening of his La Jolla location last Thursday, June 1. But, that excitement quickly turned to frustration just two days later when someone was caught on security camera around 6 a.m. Saturday, stealing the cash register from behind the restaurant's bar after breaking in through the delivery entrance."He walked right in, grabbed the register, pulled the whole set up, ripped everything off the wall," Cevasco told FOX 5.According to the owner, the suspect was in and out of the restaurant within a minute, taking with him about $500 that was inside the register. The Miami Heat roar back in Game 2 to tie the Denver Nuggets in NBA Finals DENVER (AP) — Staring down a 2-0 deficit in the NBA Finals, as the visitors in a hostile arena where no road team had prevailed in more than two months, the Miami Heat decided to do what they’ve done throughout the postseason. They found a way. Against all odds. Again. The Heat tied the NBA Finals and had to overcome a monster 41-point effort from Nikola Jokic to do it. Gabe Vincent scored 23 points, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo each had 21 and Heat beat the Denver Nuggets 111-108 in Game 2 on Sunday night.“Our guys are competitors,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “They love these kind of moments.”Evidently.They were down by as many as 15 points, down eight going into the fourth, and those numbers signified they were going to lose. Denver was 11-0 in these playoffs when leading by double digits at any point in a game, and 37-1 this season overall when leading by at least eight going into the fourth. The Heat didn’t care. They outscored Denver 17-5 in the first 3:17 of the fourth...

Stock market today: Crude prices are up after Saudi cuts, but energy prices way down from last year

Stock market today: Crude prices are up after Saudi cuts, but energy prices way down from last year BEIJING — Wall Street is relatively flat Monday following last week’s last surge propelled by U.S. jobs data that raised new questions about if or when a recession might arrive. Futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are essentially unchanged heading into a week with little new data expected from major U.S. corporations or economic indicators from Washington. Energy prices are rising after Saudi Arabia said it will cut output by 1 million barrels per day to support sagging prices. But gasoline prices in the U.S. remain far below where they were at this point last year, according to price checker GasBuddy. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. on Monday was $3.51, down $1.35 at this point in 2022, and down 4 cents from last week. Last year at this time, the cost for a barrel of oil was approaching $120. Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index leapt 1.5% Friday after government data showed employers hired more people than expect...

Is it real or made by AI? Europe wants a label for that as it fights disinformation LONDON (AP) — The European Union is pushing online platforms like Google and Meta to step up the fight against false information by adding labels to text, photos and other content generated by artificial intelligence, a top official said Monday. EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said the ability of a new generation of AI chatbots to create complex content and visuals in seconds raises “fresh challenges for the fight against disinformation.” Jourova said she asked Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok and other tech companies that have signed up to the 27-nation bloc’s voluntary agreement on combating disinformation to dedicate efforts to tackling the AI problem.Online platforms that have integrated generative AI into their services, such as Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Google’s Bard chatbot, should build safeguards to prevent “malicious actors” from generating disinformation, Jourova said at a briefing in Brussels. The ‘test case’ for anti-LGBTQ legislation in Canada A policy in New Brunswick that took 10 years to create and was implemented by a Conservative government three years ago is now being “reviewed” by that same government.“Policy 713” was designed to provide safety for LGBTQIA+ kids in public schools, from washroom use to students being able to change their names or pronouns without parental contact. Premier Blaine Higgs has been vague about what the review entails, and phrases such as “parents have a right to know” have been used.Dale Smith, a parliamentary press gallery journalist and national columnist for Xtra, says that the Premier has not explained why the policy needs to be under review.“Policy 713 was entirely designed for these students, who don’t have safe environments at home, to be able to at least express themselves or be themselves in a school environment so that they can focus on actually learning rather than having to hide their identities and who they are,” Smith sa...

UK to house hundreds more migrants on barges, Sunak says LONDON (AP) — The U.K. government will house hundreds more asylum-seekers on barges, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday, as he unveiled the latest migration figures that he said showed that his plans to crack down on small boat crossings on the English Channel are working. Two more barges will house about 1,000 migrants, Sunak said, alongside one that’s set to be docked in Portland in southern England within the next two weeks. The move is meant to help save millions in taxpayers’ money currently spent to house asylum-seekers in hotels across the country.Sunak told reporters that compared to the same time last year, the number of people making the dangerous sea crossing on small vessels from northern France to the southern English coast so far this year has decreased by a fifth. He suggested that the U.K. was doing better than other countries in Europe, where he said unauthorized migrant crossings have increased by a third over the same period. Figures from the Home ...

At Normandy D-Day celebrations, echoes of Ukraine’s looming fight

At Normandy D-Day celebrations, echoes of Ukraine’s looming fight STE MARE EGLISE, Normandy, France — (AP) — While U.S. military officers here caution against too direct a comparison between the 1944 D-Day landings and Ukraine’s upcoming counteroffensive, the echoes of what Kyiv faces today are a dominant theme of this year’s commemorations of the young U.S. soldiers who died on the Normandy beaches nearly 80 years ago. For days the villages and towns surrounding Omaha and Utah beaches have held parades, memorial events, flyovers and parachute demonstrations to build up to the annual celebration of D-Day, the launch of Operation Overlord. The June 6, 1944 invasion marked the beginning of the Allies’ massive ground invasion which would eventually lead to Germany’s surrender and the end of World War II in Europe. The celebration is taking place as Ukraine prepares to launch its own counteroffensive against Russia — an impending fight for which many of those same allied forces have now provided billions of dollars in weapons a...
